The carbon tax will be further increased in 2018 on all fossil fuels (such as heating oil, natural gas).

An increase to CHF 96 per tonne CO2 as of 1 January 2018 is the last step according to the CO2 legislation in place still 2020. It was necessary because CO2 emissions from thermal fuels in 2016 exceeded the required 73% of the 1990 base year. On the other hand, the interim target of 76%, which would have triggered an increase to the lawful maximum rate of CHF 120 per tonne CO2, was met.
